The Bridgewater Canal was opened in 1761 to carry coal from the Duke of Bridgwater’s mine to the centre of Manchester.

 

1894 The Manchester Ship Canal opens to huge fanfare, with one commentator saying “when finished (the canal) will be the most extraordinary thing in the kingdom, if not Europe".

 

But today both canals have very little commercial use. In this project, I explore the relationship the local population has with both stretches of water.
